Add 2026 to 2035 to my calendarChristmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday. When this page was last built, it was 58 days away, with 42 working days left in England and Wales before it. The countdown above does not rely on that: it reads your device's clock and counts the days, hours, minutes and seconds to midnight on 25 December in your own time zone, so it is right wherever you are. Children usually count in sleeps, the number of nights left to go to bed before Christmas morning, which is the number of days left. In 2026 Christmas Day is a Friday and the Boxing Day bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December, so the break runs over four days; in 2027 Christmas falls on a Saturday and the bank holidays are the Monday and Tuesday after. Advent, the four Sundays before Christmas in the church calendar, begins on Sunday, 29 November 2026 in 2026.

How the countdown counts
The countdown aims at midnight at the start of 25 December in the time zone your device is set to. It reads the time from your phone or computer when the page opens and updates every second. Nothing is sent to a server: the page knows the date of Christmas and does the subtraction on your device. If you share the page with family abroad, each of them sees the countdown to their own midnight, which is usually what you want when planning a video call.
Advent and the church calendar
In the Church of England calendar the Christian year begins on Advent Sunday, the fourth Sunday before Christmas, which falls between 27 November and 3 December. The four Sundays of Advent are a time of preparation, often marked by lighting one more candle on an Advent wreath each week. Christmas itself lasts twelve days, to Twelfth Night on 5 January, before Epiphany on the 6th. Many people keep decorations up until then.
Planning the run-up
For most households the countdown is really about deadlines. Last recommended posting dates for Christmas, published each year by Royal Mail, fall in the third week of December for second class and a few days later for first class. Online orders slow down after Black Friday, and deliveries promised in working days skip the bank holidays: the working days calculator counts them for your nation. The Christmas bank holidays page lists the days off around Christmas and New Year for each year, and the simulator under the summary gives the sleeps, weekends and working days from any date you choose.
Christmas Day and the weekdays
The weekday of Christmas changes the shape of the whole holiday. When it falls on a Friday, as in 2026, the Boxing Day bank holiday moves to Monday and the break covers a long weekend. When it falls on a Saturday, as in 2027, both bank holidays move to the following Monday and Tuesday. When it falls on a Monday, as in 2028, Christmas Eve is a Sunday and the two bank holidays fall on Monday and Tuesday without any move. The table above lists the bank holidays for each Christmas to 2035, and the Christmas bank holidays page shows how much annual leave a break of ten days or more takes.
